Wrong Side Of 40

The ramblings of an older bloke

And then I bought an Apple Watch

I’ll never buy an Apple Watch, I said and then I bought an Apple watch.  Well, if there’s a trait most people will recognise in Apple Watchme it’s procrastination, and at least I’m consistent in my inconsistency!

Reasons: I was on holiday in the USA, they cost less over there compared to over here, my wife quite fancied one, and the one I wanted which was black with a black stainless steel strap looked pretty cool.  I forget any other reasons.

Three months on and I wear it every day.  Observations in brief are:

I don’t stand up every time I get the notification that I should, and I don’t always do the exercise that it says I should but I’m more aware of it, which in itself is no bad thing.

I get notifications of important stuff on my wrist, and that saves me from looking at my phone a lot of the time, which I like.

I can dismiss things more easily and that saves me checking my phone – a glance to the watch will do.

I get alerts from PRTG on my watch if something is wrong which I notice more than my phone, strangely.

I no longer miss Facebook Messenger posts from my kids.

Receiving texts is more instant.  It sounds odd but it is.  I can quickly look down and read.

Coupled with sat nav, the tap on the wrist directions and audible clicks are much better than glancing down at the phone/car display.  I don’t like voice directions via sat nav as, weirdly, I find them intrusive, and for some reason the watch feedback is more instant and I respond to it faster.  How useful it was travelling while on holiday it was a revelation especially travel alerts and boarding passes.

Siri – saying “Hey Siri” followed by whatever I want to ask seems to be more accurate on the watch than the phone, and yet I know they are the same.  Better microphone on the watch maybe?  Either way it’s more useful.

ApplePay is quick and simple.  Used a few times with ease (cashiers always seem to respond with a “wow”)

Email alerts from VIP contacts – I never miss an important email any more, even when I put my phone down somewhere, or stuffed it in a pocket.  I have regular email alerts turned off as I get way too many.

When out on my motorcycle when things are usually very well put aware within secured pockets, if I get a notification for something, I can check it easily.  I don’t let much interrupt me on the bike, but when I stop, a quick check o the watch is way better than digging for the phone.

I have taken a call on the watch.  Usually when on a couch, while watching TV, comfy, and with the phone the other side of the room.  It isn’t awful.

The battery easily lasts a full day and telling the time works.

In short, I’m a convert.  The only thing I don’t like is that it being an Apple product there will be another one, probably this year, and then I’ll want to upgrade it and as I said in my previous post on Apple Watch this is not a problem I’ve had or ever anticipate having other watches.
