iPhone dissapointment
I have to say I’m dissapointed in the UK Iphone hacking community, if indeed there is one.
Prior to the UK launch there were lots of claims of “UK Iphone will be unlocked in hours” etc. but as we now know it hasn’t been unlocked in the weeks since the launch. Of course it took a good amount of time in the US before it was eventually unlocked, or jailbroken, but still.
I have been asked by some people why I would want to unlock my Iphone and the answer really is quite simple. The O2 networks is pretty lousy once you move into the countryside and given that’s where I live, coverage is poor. Compare that to Orange which is the network I was using prior to getting my Iphone or Vodaphone which I have data card with both of whom have excellent networks.
Secondly, there a bunch of apps out there written for jailbrokern Iphones and some are really useful (not all I might add) and I’d like to be able to choose to install them. That Apple has chosen to deny us this ability is pretty poor, but I imagine the reason is that if they allow access to the Iphone to software developers together with some kind of development kit somebody may hack the baseband.
I hear that Apple do plan to offer the SDK soon, but you can bet that the legal contract for access will be a beaut and
functionality locked by way of only offering a simulator to program to, rather than an open Iphone.
I am comforted somewhat (perversley as it goes, as hackers are the bane of my other life) by the addage that it if someone can make it someone can hack it. I just wish the UK community would hurry up!
